Sports hydration handout

Water is one of the most important components of the human body. Water regulates the body’s temperature. During exercise, sweat is produced to help cool the body through evaporation. If an athlete is dehydrated, the body is unable to cool itself efficiently, leading to heat exhaustion and life-threatening heat stroke. Fluid losses as low as 2% of total body weight can greatly impair body temperature regulation.
